NW Energy Coalition Report, September 2001

NW Energy Coalition Turns Twenty

The NW Energy Coalition will celebrate two decades of action and achievement in shaping a clean and affordable energy future for the Northwest at its Fall 2001 Board Meeting and Conference . The 20th Anniversary weekend, to be held October 5 to 7 in Seattle, Washington , will feature panels on the key energy issues facing the region and will provide opportunities for discussion among decision makers, policy analysts, activists, and interested members of the public.

On Friday October 5, panelists will introduce and discuss a plan to boost regionwide investments in cost-effective energy conservation and spur development of new sources of renewable energy. Discussion topics will also include:

  • implementation of the National Marine Fisheries Service¹s Biological Opinion (federal salmon recovery plan),

  • the impact of the energy crisis on consumers and low-income households

  • the potential for construction of high-voltage transmission lines and nuclear and fossil fuel power plants.

Following Friday¹s one-day conference, a 20th anniversary celebration dinner will honor Coalition and other pioneers who helped make the Northwest a leader in developing clean energy, safeguarding consumers and making energy affordable for more low-income households. Invited speakers include Congressman Jay Inslee , U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell , Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber , Washington Governor Gary Locke , former Governor Mike Lowry , Columbia River Intertribal Fish Commission Director Don Sampson , and Bullitt Foundation President Denis Hayes .

Saturday¹s two-track agenda will cater to both NW Energy Coalition stalwarts and people new to energy issues. Coalition Board members and allies will participate in a strategic planning process to determine the organization¹s goals for the next three years while invited experts lay out the history of energy in the Northwest and look ahead to key opportunities to promote clean and affordable energy policy in the future. Come join the regional voice for clean energy by registering online for the conference and by reserving your seat at the Friday celebration dinner.
